Dear Family,

So, you’d think 4 nights in a hotel, paid by your work would be a good thing, right. Not! 10 volunteers and we are somewhat holed up right now in this hotel.  We hope to be back in our apartment by Tuesday. We are all safe and sound just inconvenienced. For dinner last night at the hotel, I had bacon wrapped pork with fried zucchini. It was delicious and yes, I ate the zucchini. I also ate a Caesar salad. Friday night we ate dinner at the Ottesen’s. It was great having everyone together. Out here, we can’t congregate so the volunteers don’t meet together outside of zone conferences and church.

We had district meeting on Saturday instead of Friday because of all the stuff that was going on. Elder Worden had our training. (Counting us there are 8 volunteers in our district) It was on forgiveness and the atonement. He referenced this set of scriptures.
Moroni 7:45-48
45 And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

46 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail—

47 But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him.

48 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen.

Elder Worden talked about the phrase “seeketh not her own.”  Most of us discussed this as not taking credit or being acknowledged for service that you do.  Elder Worden explained that to him it was like when Christ sat and ate with the sinners. The sinners are the ones who need him. At times, we need to seek out and serve those who aren’t family, best friends, etc.  Anyway, it gave me a new perspective on that part of the scriptures.

Saturday Dad and I went to the Samara Russia Air and Space museum. This is what the internet says about it, ‘Few people know that Samara was one of the main builders of the Soviet Union’s space program. It is there where “Vostok “rocket", which made the first flight in the history of mankind into space, was assembled. It is there, where the aerospace power of the Soviet Union was formed, and it would be strange if such a memorable event were not perpetuated in the city’s history.

A real-life P -7 rocket was installed in Kozlov Square, Lenin Avenue in 2001. The history of the rocket began in 1984, when it was manufactured as a simulator for the USSR’s Space Forces. The height of the monument is 68 meters, and weight is over 20 tons.

The monument became very popular and on April 12, 2007 near it the “Cosmic Samara” Museum was opened to present the rocketry history. Soon, the museum was awarded as the best tourism project of Samara, becoming an indispensable item in the excursion programs. Indeed, this is one of the most unusual and interesting landmarks in the city.

Yuri Gagarin, was the first man in space. In 1957 the former Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the first man-made space satellite object. Four years later, on April 12, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut (astronaut) number 1 Yuri Gagarin made a successful orbit of Earth aboard the spacecraft Vostok. As the first human to fly in space, Gagarin represented a technical triumph for the Soviet Union.

Although Gagarin did not make another space flight, he remained a national hero and a leader in Russia's cosmonaut training program. His death during a training mission in 1968 was mourned throughout the Soviet Union.

We even saw pictures of drawings here on earth that depict people from other planets visiting earth and what someone thinks they look like.

One display showed the type of food they had such as freeze-dried Borscht. Looking at the capsule Yuri was in definitely wasn’t for someone who was claustrophobic. I know I couldn’t fold myself into his chair, at least not at my age.

President Ottesen sends the missionaries out a letter each week. Last Monday he was talking about self-mastery.  This is definitely something I need to work on as far as my diet goes.

Controlling your thoughts and developing mastery over your physical body is one of the most important things you will do here on earth. As full time representatives of the Lord Jesus Christ, you have an obligation to control your temper, your speech, appetites, passions --and especially your thoughts. You rarely do something wrong you’ve never first thought of doing. The thought preceeds the deed. For disciples of Christ in Samara who anxious to live without sin, it is important for you to learn to control your thoughts.

You will need to develop your own technique for controlling your thoughts when you are distracted by images and things here in Russia that might rob you of the spirit and limit your full potential as a missionary. My first mission president (who was a prisoner of war in Russia) used to tell us--“you can’t prevent a bird from trying to land on your head, but you can prevent the bird from building a nest there”. I think that means that while you can’t always prevent thoughts from coming to your mind, you can totally determine whether they stay there or not.

So how can you control that?

President Boyd K. Packer, gave a wonderful talk while was in high school about controlling thoughts. He said, “Probably the greatest challenge to people of any age, particularly young people, and the most difficult thing you will face in mortal life is to learn to control your thoughts. As a man ‘thinketh in his heart, so is he’ (Proverbs 23:7). One who can control his thoughts has conquered himself.” President Packer compared our minds to a stage with performers who occupy that stage during every waking hour of our lives. He said, “They will enact for you ... anything to the limits of your toleration. ...“If you let them, they will devise the most clever persuasions to hold your attention. ... Even convince you that it is innocent—for they are only thoughts.

“If you can control your thoughts, you can overcome habits. If you can learn to master them you will have a happy life. “This is what I would teach you. Choose from among the sacred music of the Church a favorite hymn. ... Memorize it. ... “Once you learn to clear the stage of your mind from unworthy thoughts, keep it busy with learning worthwhile things”.

Lot’s of great advice. Lot’s to work on.

Well keep Russian and the volunteer’s in your prayers.

Love,

Mom

July 31, 2016

Well, last week during conferences ones of the goals set by our zone was to do SYL, speak your language from 12:00 to 9:00 every day. This should help their language a lot. They asked for a commitment by a show of hands. Dad and I raised our hands about half way and a lot of the volunteers were looking to see if we did. Well anyone coming in hears the same thing each time. “kak vas savoot?” (what’s your name) and “Minya savoot sestra Stewart” (my name is sister stewart). I throw out an occasional Deairiva (tree) and Sabawka (dog), or what ever else I can remember. Dad does a lot better than I do. The AP’s asked us how much Russian we wanted them to speak to us and I just asked them back, “how much do you want me to understand.”

When our District met on Friday (we meet every Friday, I always bring them fruit) they set another goal to memorize the first two articles of faith in Russian.

1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
1 Мы верим в Бога, Отца Вечного, и в Сына Его, Иисуса Христа, и в Духа Святого.
( Mwe Verem v boga, oteza Vechnavo, E v sinna yevo, Esusa Krista, E v duha Svyatavo)

2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam’s transgression.
2 Мы верим, что люди будут наказаны за свои собственные грехи, а не за согрешение Адама.

We are supposed to have this memorized by next Friday. I’ve almost to the first one down.  I hereby throw down a challenge to all of you. Memorize the first article of faith in a foreign language. You can go to lds.org and choose study and scriptures and then choose the Pearl of Great Price and then go to The Articles of Faith. Copy the first article of faith and then paste it into Google Translate and choose the language you want to translate it into.

Let me know how many of you will accept my challenge. Those of you who speak a foreign language choose a different one.

Part of my job at the mission office is to enter any referrals we get that don’t fall within our mission and send them to the church headquarters. There is a program on my computer into which I enter the information and then it is sent to the mission it should go to. We periodically get referrals from that same program. When they come in, I try to determine which set of missionaries it should go to. The AP’s will help me with this also. I check for referrals every day, several times. I’m always so excited when we get one. I’m not sure what I can do with them now with the new law and all. I guess someone will know. Maybe I’ll have to send them to the branch president.

Last Zone conference President Ottesen asked Elder’s Allred and Kendall to stand up and tell the other volunteers a little bit of how they felt being able to baptize a family of four (that rarely happens here). There was a Mom and Dad and two boys ages 10 and 12. When they heard about the new law going into effect they pushed up the baptism a few days so their elders could baptize them. Elder Kendall spoke first and then Elder Allred. Elder Allred started by saying that after they got this referral from me, they called the father and set up an appointment. When they got there, they discovered that they were also meeting with the wife and two sons.  My heart just kind of stopped. I was so touched that sometime I did lead our volunteers to this wonderful family.

Elder Lee is one of our NovoK elders. He is so funny. You’d almost think he was a little slow because he kind of talks slow, but this kid started college when he was 16, and is only two semesters away from having his Bachelor’s degree. Anyway, Dad got a hilarious email from him requesting a reimbursement. The first is from Elder Lee and then Dad’s response to him.

Hello,
I hope you are having a good day, Elder Stewart. Elder Lee is sorry if he spelled your name wrong. He always sees it spelled in Russian, not English.
Elder Lee requests reimbursements for:
July 11: taxi ride out of Samara after picking up Elder Alley from the Assistants' apartment: 400 rubles
July 11: taxi ride out of Samara again after giving back a suitcase Elder Lee accidentally stole from another missionary (it looked exactly like Elder Alley's other bags, okay?) : 280 rubles
July 23: taxi ride to Samara for district meeting. Elder Lee would have taken the train, which was cheaper, but it didn't run on Saturdays and the bus would have taken him to district meeting late. Usually district meeting is on FRIDAY, but the Emergency Zone Conference threw a curveball into Elder Lee's schedule.
In total, Elder Lee is asking for 1172 rubles in reimbursements.

Elder Alley will ask for his reimbursements by himself, probably by phone. Therefore, please put the funds on Elder Lee's card. Elder Lee and Elder Alley keep their funds separate. This was Elder Lee's idea, because he saw that Elder Alley ate a lot, and selfishly enforced the idea upon Elder Alley. Elder Lee feels bad about it now, and tells Elder Alley he doesn't have to keep doing it if he doesn't want to, but there are apparently perks to this system, and Elder Alley likes the perks too much to feel like he needs to switch back.

Thank you for your help! Thank you for sitting through that awkward anecdote! Thank you for putting up with the weird third-person narration!
Elders Lee and Alley

Elder Lee,

What is weird about your narration?  Elder Stewart thinks it is perfectly normal.  Elder Stewart hopes you aren’t making fun of Elder Stewart, and all other rational beings in the known universe.  Elder Stewart would not be angered by such an affront, but Elder Stewart would be surprised that a calm, rational person such as yourself would commit such an egregious act.  By the way, your spelling of Elder Stewart’s name is positively correct.  Many other, less observant individuals would have spelled Elder Stewart’s name incorrectly.

Elder Stewart understands your feelings about Elder Alley’s ability to consume mass quantities of food.  Sister Stewart is much the same way, but Elder Stewart is not in a position to say anything about it to Sister Stewart as it could cause Elder Stewart to, of necessity, associate with the homeless people of Samara.  My goodness, Elder Stewart may be in considerable trouble.  Elder Stewart suppositions that Sister Stewart may be reading this over Elder Stewart’s shoulder.

He is the funniest kid; I just love him to death. When he translates for us, we are always getting some side commentary from him. At times, it makes us want to laugh or smile, which isn’t always, appropriate with what we are listening to. Sometimes he forgets to translate because he is caught up in the discussion.

We are going on a dreaded visa trip in August. I hard because it’s just down and back, and the roads are that great. You don't stop for anything except to check in when you go across the border.

Friday the Ottesen’s took us out to dinner for our anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been 46 years; wow, and we get to celebrate it in Russia. We went to the Chika restaurant, which in Russian means Seagull. It’s right on the embankment. We’ve eaten there one other time. We had Caesar salad and pork ribs. We got there around 6:30 and got home at 10:30. We did walk home which was about 40 minutes. It was a beautiful evening. They asked about how Dad and I met, and our whole story and they told us theirs. The Ottesen’s are such a great couple, and are doing wonderful as the new Mission president and wife. They have been hit with so much with the new law and all. He told Dad that he could never seem to get to the bottom of the bowl.

During the week, Dad and I were talking to the AP’s about going with us so I could get a new phone. The one I’m using for the mission is very hard to use, at least for me. Elder Oldham’s sense of humor really took ahold of him when I started joking about phones.

Sister Stewart to the AP’s, “I really want an iPhone but Elder Stewart doesn’t think we can afford it.”
Elder Oldham, deadpan face, “You could take back your $300 dress.”

I was speechless. I couldn’t think of a good comeback.  He had me.
I just gave him a glare and told him, “You just made my letter home this week.”
Elder Oldham, “That’s not fair you only put the bad stuff in that. I’m sorry for being a jerk.”
Me, “You’re not a jerk, just sarcastic. That’s not a problem for me; my family was raised on sarcasm and guilt.”

I made Kelly’s creamy chicken enchiladas today for the AP’s and Dad. I didn’t have any green chilis so I had to spice it up in other ways. I had to make homemade cream of chicken soup and I added a bunch of stuff that and used it for my sauce. They turned out good.

Love you all tons,

Mom
