Dear Family,

Can you believe another week has gone by!! We are down to 8 months and 25 days.  I worked on my “How To” handbook for the next office secretary this week. Since the law has changed I needed to update things. Hopefully who ever follows Dad and I out here will be able to follow our notes ok.

I found marshmallows’ at a store in a mall on Saturday. I bought several bags. I was hoping to make fudge for Christmas but I hadn’t seen marshmallows anywhere.  They don’t have Karo syrup here either so toffee is going to be iffy. I did find a recipe for it on-line so I’ll try a batch and see how it turns out.

We welcomed two new volunteers this week and said goodbye to 4. It’s exciting to have them come in but also so sad to have them leave.

Thursday Ramon took Dad and me to Metro. We hadn’t been in a while so we had to stock up. We ended up having to buy two new reusable bags for our stuff. Ramon helps bring the bags upstairs and he carried 6 bags at a time. This guy is in his 50’s but is still in super good shape.

Friday we had our district meeting and they all decided to make tacos afterwards. They invited the sister’s investigator, Jonathan, over for it. Dad and I were in the office working when all of a sudden the fire alarm went off. Apparently, Elder Buchanan took a pan off the burner and put it on a hot pad. Then he put the pan back on the burner but the hot pad was stuck to the bottom of the pan, and he didn’t notice. The resulting smoke set off the fire alarm. Dad shut off the alarm and then Sasha got a call from the fire department.  He assures them that everything is fine.

We had District Conference this week. It’s like Stake conference only for a smaller group of people. To get ready for my Sunday dinner I fried a ton of hamburger and onions on Friday night (I cook a lot so I can freeze some for later). Saturday after conference I made chili and cornbread. Sunday I made apple crisp. I had chips and grated cheese to go with it. I had a ton of food and it turned out pretty good.  Elder Lytle was there for the first time so we gave him the princess cup.

On Saturday we went to the conference, and I ran into Lyudmila from NovoK. She is the sweetest little Babushka. We gave each other a huge hug and said at the same time “I love you too,” in English. We do this almost every Sunday. I went with the women to the women’s meeting while the priesthood had their meeting.  I did go through 3 translators. I gave the microphone to Sister Hofmann and she handed it off to Sister Palmer and she handed it off to Sister Graham.

Sister O ended that meeting talking about how to keep the feeling you get while attending the temple with you every day. She said to 1. Feast on the word of God everyday. She used the example of Mary and Martha.

 2. Take time every day to serve someone. She talked about her handicapped brother who almost drowned, as a young boy, in a neighbor’s pool. The sisters in her ward worked together to help take care of her brother. She said because of their great care her brother lived another 15 years.

3. Make time to be grateful every day. She talked about the 10 leapers and how all were healed and only one came back to thank Jesus. He received a blessing for his gratitude.

Luke 17:19
19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole

It was a great talk. In the main meeting on Sunday one Sister who is waiting for her mission call (should be at the office on Monday), talked about how the Savior is closer than you think he is. The next speaker talked about how we (LDS) are not alone in Russia there are a lot of us. He talked about how life changed when he came into contact with the church. Then he told us that when we serve in the Temple we are saving our relatives.

The Stake Relief Society President, Sister Zolitoff, spoke and she has been a member for 20 years. She talked about the importance of Free Agency. How we are free to choose but not free from the consequences.

Another speaker talked about doing more than we are doing now and the cleansing power of repentance and the Sacrament. Another speaker talked about Faith. How God exists but some people don’t move toward him so they don’t find him.

Sister Ottesen talked about being unified and President O talked about not being offended and to go and find the Lords lost sheep.

It’s so amazing in the Church, this could have been a conference held anywhere in the world. We are all learning about the same things. I guess one thing was different; we listened to a translation of all the talks through a headset.

It’s been sunny out for over a week now but the temperature has dropped dramatically. I guess we can have it warmer but overcast or sunny and freezing.

I’m sending pictures of a Russian Orthodox Church. I thought it looked interesting because of the skyscrapers behind it.

We took a picture of a statue across from the Mega City mall. We went there on Saturday for lunch and Dad bought an external hard drive, ours quit working.

This is what the internet says about the man the statue is for;
Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov (/ˌlɒməˈnɔːsɔːf, -sɒf/;[1] Russian: Михаи́л Васи́льевич Ломоно́сов; IPA: [mʲɪxɐˈil vɐˈsʲilʲjɪvʲɪtɕ ləmɐˈnosəf] ( listen); November 19 [O.S. November 8] 1711 – April 15 [O.S. April 4] 1765) was a Russian polymath, scientist and writer, who made important contributions to literature, education, and science. Among his discoveries was the atmosphere of Venus and the Law of Mass Conservation in chemical reactions. His spheres of science were natural science, chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, art, philology, optical devices and others. Lomonosov was also a poet and influenced the formation of the modern Russian literary language.

President had a great letter this week. I’ll share a part of it with you:

For the past 10 years, I made monthly business trips to China. Over the years, I learned to eat handily with chopsticks and I met some incredible people. One lady I met told me a powerful story. In the 1960s, China went through a terrible cultural revolution where millions of Chinese farmers were starved by their government. Back then, she was a small girl. She grew up in a family of 7 children where food was scarce. The family only had enough money to afford 1 fish per day to share with the entire family—usually only a carp. That is not much food. The little family of 7 was slowly starving. She described mealtime where he watched his mother divide up the fish to be shared by all the children. Then just a young girl, she remembered when the family sat down to the meal, the mother insisted on taking the fish head as her portion. At the time, the young girl thought it was odd his mother wanted to have the fish head. But she said the children were so hungry they eagerly ate their small portion of fish and really didn't think much of their mother stuck with the fish head. Why do you think this mother chose the fish head over the better parts of the fish? I think you can guess. While her children barely survived starvation, sadly the mother did not. It was not until after she died that her children realized the sacrifice she had made for all of them. I am guessing you have a mother who would do that very same thing for you. What have you done for her lately to show her how much you appreciate her?

This is to Mom: MOM, I LOVE YOU. YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN SUCH A GOOD EXAMPLE OF MOTHERHOOD, WIFEHOOD, FEELING CLOSE TO GOD, ALL WHILE HAVING A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR AND HAVING FUN IN LIFE. YOU’VE HAVE HELPED TO SHAPE THE PERSON I AM TODAY AND I WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL THAT YOU AND DAD RAISED ME TO LOVE GOD AND TO LOVE MY FAMILY. THANK YOU FOR NEVER GIVING UP ON ME AND ALWAYS LOVING ME AND MY CHILDREN AND MY GRANDCHILDREN. LYNN AND I PRAY FOR YOU EVERY NIGHT.

What are you doing to try and eliminate selfishness from your heart?

The Lord rebuked some leaders in His restored Church for being selfish---for seeking the praise of the world and for having their minds on the things of the earth more than on the things of the Lord (D&C 30:2; 58:39). Those rebukes remind us that as his servants in Russia, we are to act differently. Elder John A. Widtsoe said of latter day missionaries like us, “We cannot walk as other men, or talk as other men, or do as other men, for we have a different destiny, obligation, and responsibility placed upon us, and we must fit ourselves [to it].”

C. S. Lewis explained this teaching of the Savior: “The moment you have a self at all, there is a possibility of putting yourself first—wanting to be the center—wanting to be God, in fact. That was the sin of Satan: and that was the sin he taught the human race. Some people think the fall of man had something to do with sex, but that is a mistake. … What Satan put into the heads of our ancestors was the idea that they could ‘be like gods’—could set up on their own as if they had created themselves—be their own masters—invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God. And out of that hopeless attempt has come … the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.”

A selfish person is more interested in pleasing himself—than in pleasing God.

A great example of unselfish service is the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta. She gave herself to “wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor.” She taught that “one thing will always secure heaven for us—the acts of charity and kindness with which we have filled our lives. She said, “We can do no great things,” ---only small things with great love

Love you all

Dear Family,

This week was pretty eventful with zone training and visa trips. Monday was snowing heavily and Dad and I bundled up to walk to work. The rest of the week warmed up and all the snow melted which made for rivers and lakes all over the place, (thank heaven for boots).

Part of our zone training was some instruction from the Elder and Sister Reed (from Moscow) on addiction recovery. Then there was training from Elder and Sister Hancock (our mission), on Self Reliance. The Reeds ordered a ton of material for their part and Sister Hancock asked me to order the stuff they needed. She wanted a set of 3 booklets and 2 pamphlets for each volunteer. Plus she wanted me to make sure I had enough to give the new volunteers. Currently we have 62 volunteers with one coming in November and 8 coming in December so I order 80 of each item. Well the majority of what I ordered was back ordered. I ended up with 19 complete sets and several partials. We needed a little more time to get them all. They gave the complete sets to the Saratov zone because they are the furthest away. When the other things come it will be easier to get them to the ones in our area.

I love these conferences because I get to see all the volunteers in our zone. Wendy you can tell your friend that I saw Elder Briggs at the training and that he was laughing a joking with the other volunteers and seems very happy and comfortable in his environment. He is doing great!

These young volunteers amaze me at the job they do. Elder’s Vandermark and Hemrick are our zone leaders and they conducted the training. Sister Howe, who is a Sister Training Leader, also took park. They gave some incredible insights. Some of the topics of discussion were in making your prayers more meaningful.  How you should not only pray to overcome your weaknesses but recognize and thank your Father in Heaven for your strengths. It’s often easier to look at what’s wrong rather than what’s right. Trust that if your plans fall through it might be because God has something better for you out there.

OK, so one of our AP’s is a passionate Patriots and Tom Brady fan. He was raised from birth to love the Patriots. Well on his desk he has, what we term, a Tom Brady doll. He calls it an action figure. One of our Avrora Elders took it off Elder Buchanan’s desk and put in a vat of Jell-O. So at the zone training, when we had a break for lunch, he came in and saw his Doll sitting on the table in orange Jell-O. I think he wanted to rant and rave but managed to keep it together. He was utterly speechless. He just turned around and walked out.

After eating we went back to the training. Elder Buchanan called and told Dad and I that we needed to come back to the office to sign something for our Visa’s and we had to be back before 3:00 pm. We decided to just leave then because they were trying to get a video to work. I walked into the office and saw Elder Buchanan, not at the training, and this is how it went down:

Me, “Elder Buchanan, I hope you just didn’t get mad, take your toys and go home!”
Him, “No, no, I had to come back and do some things. But did you see, they turned Tom Brady orange.”
Me, “You’ve never pulled any pranks on anyone while here?”
Him, “Nothing like that.”
Me, “So you did get mad and go home.”
Him, “No, I wasn’t mad.”

I just gave him a disbelieving look and Dad told him that the Jell-O would wash off. So not only are these Volunteers amazingly mature but are also amazingly just like 18 to 20 year olds. I know what Janet is thinking right now, that she would have gotten mad too!!

So when you go on a visa trip you bring some food and beverages. I decided not to pack sandwiches because we figured we’d be back at the office by 1:00 pm. The bus was supposed to leave the office at 5:15 am but the sisters from Bezi were late. Well they were ready but they didn’t see the bus. I guess he’d been waiting about ½ hour. Anyway we finally got on the road. It was foggy outside and dark so most of the volunteers went to sleep. I read for a while. No problems getting to the boarder. We went through and we didn’t get interviewed this time all except for Elder Johnston. When we were coming back into Russia we weren’t given immigration papers. They told our driver to just go ahead and go and if we get stopped to tell them we lost them.

Elder Johnston called President Blinkov who told our driver not to leave until we get those papers. We leave the guard station in the bus but then parked. We didn’t want to leave without those papers. We learned that apparently they were out of them. They had a truck that would deliver them each day and it hadn’t arrived yet. The papers came from Orenburg which is about 8 hours away. Didn’t know if they were just messing with us or not but we didn’t dare leave. Elder Johnston said when he was up at the guard station he heard them tell someone else that they didn’t have immigration forms.

We sat on the bus for several hours waiting and I shared my Almonds and dried pineapple mix and popcorn. I was wishing I had made those sandwiches. I drink very little on these trips because the bathrooms are limited (they’ve been known to use bushes). We finally made it back to the office at about 5:00 PM.

We went to work on Friday and stayed pretty busy. Elder Johnston, one of our AP’s, is getting transferred and leaving for Kazan on Tuesday. He is in his last cycle (6 weeks) and will leave for home on December 29th. He is actually your Dad’s father!! The Volunteers call their trainer their father or mother as the case may be and their descendants go on and on. If Dad trains the couple who comes to replace us then Elder Johnston will become a grandfather. Whoever is in their last cycle is said to be dying. The companion of a volunteer in their last cycle is the one killing them.

We are going to miss Elder Johnston so much, we’ve spent a lot of time with him. We wanted to take him and his companion, Elder Buchanan, out to dinner on Saturday. We were going to meet them at the office at 5:00 pm. They called and changed it to 6:00 pm. We got there and they and the zone leaders surprised us by making us dinner. It was a rice, pineapple and chicken concoction. I kind of groaned to myself because you all know I dislike rice. But it actually tasted pretty good as long as I had either pineapple or chicken with my bite of rice.

So we were all sitting around talking after we finished eating and I brought up that my daughter, Kelly, talked a lot when she was young. If fact I would play a game with her and tell her that I bet she couldn’t be quiet for 5 minutes. She would challenge that assumption and the game would be on. After I finished telling them this every eye turned to Elder Buchanan, whom I believe has the same problem. He just got this look on his face and said:

Elder Buchanan, “What, you don’t think I can do it?”
The rest of us, “No, you can’t.”
EB, falling into our trap, “I can do it.”
TROU, “Okay, you are on.”
Elder Hemrick, “Time starts now.”
EB, “Wait, can I cough? Does that count?”
TROU, “Yes you can cough.”
EH, “The time starts now.”

Elder Johnston whips out his phone and calls Elder Wilde. Elder Wilde and Elder Buchanan have an ongoing feud about the best football team and the best quarterback. So Elder Wilde impresses me because he we on for five minutes telling Elder Buchanan why Peyton Manning was the best quarterback ever. Elder Buchanan was biting his lip and you could see his rebuttal right there on the tip of his tongue.

I was awed because Elder Buchanan made it the whole 5 minutes. Just as soon and the pending time made it to zero he grabbed the phone from Elder Johnston and started arguing. Elder Johnston swooped in and took the phone and hung it up. It was all pretty funny, but he kept quiet through it all.

Our NovoK Elders are getting transferred to new locations this week. I’m going to miss them. We are going to have Elders Lee and Miller. We’ve had Elder Lee before but elder Miller is new to NovoK. They both play the piano so that will be great. We’ve been singing without a piano accompaniment and sometimes it gets pretty bad. On one occasion, at least, I couldn’t figure out what the song was they were trying to sing.

We had the Avrora Elders and Sisters over for Sunday dinner. They brought their investigator, Johnathan with them. He is from Peru and is here on a scholarship studying Aeronautical engineering. He speaks very good English and will be baptized on December 3rd. Since none of them have been to dinner before I made them my usual roast dinner and they were all in heaven.

In President’s letter this week he had some good advice for us:

If you are looking for answers from God, there is a special prayer you can offer.

President Eyring tells us that there is a special kind of prayer that can get an immediate answer from God. He says there are 2 questions he asks in his daily prayers that will always generate an immediate response. The first is, ‘‘Whom can I help?" ---and the second is, "What blessings do I have that I am not aware of?". He says that those questions are always answered for him.

Here are 2 invitations for you:

1. May I specifically invite you to try this following very simple, sincere prayer: “Whom can I help now?”. I promise you that at least one face will come immediately to your mind. It could be a member, or a Russian friend you have made here, or a companion, or even a family member at home. I have put this to the test, and it works. Your mission here is to bless. You are here to help others. I don't think God is going to make you wait a week or a month for you to first learn something particular before answering this kind of prayer.

2. May I also specifically invite you to ask the Lord in prayer to show you blessings you haven't seen yet --or may have forgotten? The answers you get to this one may startle you. I believe it will be sweet. I predict your mind will fill with amazing realizations of blessings you now take for granted. You will feel humility and love ---and gratitude will rush into your heart.

May the Lord bless you in this effort.  I am excited for you!

Love you all,

Dear Family

I think I talked to everyone this past week. It was great hearing how all the family is doing. I enjoyed the Halloween costume pictures. I’m glad all you grandkids are doing well in school!!

We have got tons of snow. Before leaving for work on Friday Dad had me come and look out the kitchen window. It was still dark outside and the Volga street lights were on. You could see the snow by the lights coming down so hard and it was swirling and whirling all around because of the wind. Both of us wanted to stay inside.

When it was time we bundled up and headed out. We were both plenty warm enough and with the snow being deep we didn’t worry too much about ice. We made it up the stairs and were in the entry way to the apartment complex the Mission Office is in. There is a narrow opening going up a small hill. The snow and drifted into, almost, knee high snow on one side. The other side was thick black ice. We stuck on the snow side and Dad let me go first. He said he wanted to catch me if I fell but I figured he just wanted me to pave the way through the snow for him. Thank heavens it’s been melting but there are puddles everywhere.

President and Sister Ottesen like to go for walks in the morning although I think its more Sister O spear heading this endeavor. When they walked on Monday President O almost fell about 10 times. One of those times he tweaked his back and has to lay low for a few days. See what exercising will do for you! Sister O got some Yak Tracks and said they worked really well on the ice. She could stride right out. Dad and I have some but we haven’t been able to get ourselves to venture out. They left for Kazan on Thursday and President lay in the back seat in the van the whole way. The roads are bad enough I’m not sure how much good it did him.

Sister O and I had Ramon drive us to Ikea on Wednesday. I bought a couple of fry pans for the apartment and Sister O was hunting for things to give the Volunteers for Christmas. Then we made a stop at the Metro store for groceries. I did find me a coat. I have a spring one and a deep winter one and I needed something in the middle. I’m glad I found one. We were gone most of the day.

Friday was a holiday for the Russians and Monday is also. It mostly just us in the office with the AP’s there for a while. We had district meeting at 12:00 so everyone came to share lunch at 11:00. Everyone was supposed to make something. The sisters made homemade (not from the box, imagine that) The Elders brought a potato salad and the AP’s brought Ice cream. I made a taco soup the night before. It turned out great. It has hamburger, onion, salt and pepper, taco seasoning, powdered ranch dressing mix, corn, and beans. Everyone loved it. Since I didn’t have many corn chips left I cut and fried up some flour tortillas they were a hit.

One of brand new Volunteers, Elder Kennedy, gave our district training on Friday and he did an excellent job. He was so quiet when he first got here so it’s great seeing gain so much confidence. He taught us about Charity.

So today we had lunch with the Krievov’s, (we bought them McDonalds; their choice) our branch president and his wife and son. His two girls were leaving with their grandfather to go to a theatre to watch a movie for the first time in their lives. They have never gone to the movies before. They tell us that neither of the grandfathers plays with the kids much. They tell us they look to Dad and me as an example of being a good married couple and good parents. Maria told me that she was expecting again and it’s a boy due in April. They have two girls and this new son will make 2 boys. We congratulated them and they said we were the only ones. Their parents and siblings and the neighbors all think it’s a bad idea to have another kid.

As a reward for the Volunteers working so hard on their language the Ottesen’s are taking all the Volunteers to a Ballet. The Saratov zone goes this month to Swan Lake and The Toliatti and Samara zones go to Swan Lake on December 15th after zone conference. I’m really excited for it.

As a Christmas gift for the office staff we and the Ottesen’s are giving them each two tickets to the Nutcracker. We get to go also.  We didn’t expensive seats; they are 400 rubles which is a little over $6. The theater is beautiful.

Friday night I did laundry and made chocolate chips cookies. After we had lunch with the Krievov’s, we came home and Dad headed to the market while I started making Spaghetti. I decided on that for the dinner with the volunteers because I could make it ahead of time. I also made breadsticks. Then I made a pasta salad to take to NovoK tomorrow. After church, we will have a meal together at the branch.

From President Ottesen’s letter to his volunteers

Learning German as a 19 year-old missionary was unbelievably difficult for me. Period. And my 4 years of high school Spanish seemed to make the ordeal more difficult. I was not only the slowest German-speaker in my MTC district---I was also the only Elder who spoke broken German with a bad Spanish accent. I confess I had never before felt so inadequate………

There are many ways the Lord makes “weak things become strong.” The process starts with us seeing our weakness and coming to Him with the weakness. The steps? Recognition. Humility. Prayer. The Lord told Moroni in Ether 12:37, “Because thou hast SEEN thy weakness thou shalt be made strong, even unto the sitting down in the place which I have prepared in the mansions of my Father.”

Note that (in Ether 12), God is not offering to change Moroni’s weakness---he is offering to change Moroni.

As you give up your weakness through this grace-seeking process, I believe it is inevitable that you will learn bonus virtues like meekness, patience, long-suffering, and probably gratitude. It just happens. All those virtues will of course make you more like your Father in Heaven.

Well, I eventually learned to speak the impossibly difficult German language--but ONLY through His grace. I need to add that it took time. It took meekness. It took such effort. But it was a miracle to see my once (and very public) language weakness become an actual strength. It was simply amazing to me. However, I noticed that the Spanish accent never totally went away.

I know He is there. He knows you are here. In Russia. He put you here. With all your weaknesses. I believe that nowhere in your life will His love for you be more evident than when you watch Him turn your weaknesses into strengths ---and, in that process, I promise He will make you more like Him.

I love you all. We didn’t take any new pictures this week so I’m sending some random ones.

Love,

Mom
