Dear Family

This week hasn’t been too eventful for us. Dad and I have shifted our walks to the evening because by 7:00 am it is still dark outside. It comes up around 7:30am. It does get dark while we are out. The sun sets around 5:10pm but the Vulga River is well lit. When we go I put on a Cami, long sleeved shirt, hoodie, scarf, sweats and my spring coat. I have a head band thing to cover my ears and some gloves. It’s a little chilly starting out but it doesn’t take long for me to start being too hot. When we first got here it was too icy and wet to go walking.

We had a couple of sunny days last week and it was great. This week doesn’t look so good. Snow predicted for Monday and Tuesday. Then partly cloudy on Wed and the sun peaks out on Thursday. More snow for Friday and Saturday and overcast on Sunday. The highest it gets all week is 33. Some of the Volunteers suffer from S.A.D. Seasonal affective disorder because for a long time you don’t often see the sun. We have a few “Happy Lights” for light therapy that we distribute to help the ones that need it.

I’m trying to find a lighter weight coat. I either have to choose my spring coat or my stay puff marshmallow man coat. I need something in between. Today I had on my big coat and boots because it was snowing but on the way home I had to take my arms out of the sleeves of the coat because I was too hot. The bigger coat is fine if I’m outside for a while but when I’m in and out I’d prefer something less bulky. It is really hard to find things my size here.

I dyed my hair yesterday. The reason I bring this up (not because I know you are fascinated with every aspect of my life) is that it just amazes me how long the color lasts. In the US I dyed my hair every 4 weeks because of growth but also because the color faded so much. Here the color doesn’t fade and my hair grows incredibly slow. I would guess, the reason for that, is because the water isn’t treated with anything like chlorine.

On the way home from work the other day, we started going by this guy on the stairs. He started to engage Dad in conversation. I of course kept on going. I got a phone call at the bottom of the stairs where I was waiting for Dad. Dad and this man kept talking and talking. The man knew even less English that Dad’s Russian. Finally Dad got a whiff of the guy’s breath and new he was slightly tipsy. We aren’t supposed to get involved with someone who has been drinking because so many of them are mean. He dis-engaged right after that and we preceded home. The man spoke to me a little bit. He seemed friendly enough.

Last week I got to work on two power point presentations for President Ottesen. One was titled “Find the Higher Ground.”  He used a battle in the Civil War to illustrate the importance of maintaining higher ground.
Here is a short internet synopsis for the battle for Little Round Top during the civil war fought in Gettysburg:  The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought in North America. During the first three days of July 1863, the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia turned a small town in Southern Pennsylvania into the site of a struggle for the future of the United States. More than 50,000 men fell as casualties (men listed as killed, wounded, or missing/captured), a scale of suffering never seen before or since on American soil. According to many historians, Gettysburg was the turning point of the American Civil War. It was the Confederacy's best chance to achieve victory, and it breathed new life into the Union war effort.

Military strategists have studied Gettysburg battle tactics extensively. All agree the Confederates should have won that day---they had a bigger army, more cannons, more experienced soldiers, and more experienced commanding generals. What was the critical difference that day? It was the HIGH GROUND they chose to fight on. The Union soldiers were wise enough to fight from HIGH GROUND instead of the level terrain they had unsuccessfully fought on in previous battles. There is something powerful about finding the HIGH GROUND in your life.

He had a bunch of pictures from that movie, “Gettysburg” that I put into a power point presentation for him.

Then I he gave me the script and I found pictures for one on “Be Not Offended.”  It turned out really good also. President is always apologizing to me when he asks me to do something and to Dad also. I told him I loved to do things like that and I didn’t mind one bit. Part of my job here is to support him and Sister O. I am happy to do anything he wants me to do. Dad tells him the same thing. President sent Dad a text today about something and ended up telling him he didn’t know how they were going to let us go home next August. I think Dad is worried (me too) about being asked to extend because it would be very hard to tell someone who depends on us no. So Dad and I are praying we aren’t asked.

Dad and I went shopping on Saturday to the Cosmo Port mall. He found a new pair of tennis shoes and I found a scarf. We had lunch and then went grocery shopping. After making it home we hung out for a while and then went for a walk. Dad’s new shoes were rubbing on his heels and they started bleeding. He took them out of the top lace hole and they felt better.

Most of the branches were having Halloween parties on Saturday. We didn’t end up going because of Dad’s feet. Both the Bezi and Avrora branch had great turnouts. The Bezi Volunteers had a theme going. President Pacheco was Hook, Sister Howe was Peter Pan, Sister Johnson was Wendy, Elder Hemrick was a Lost Boy, Elder Anderson was Smee and Elder Quarnburg was Tinkerbell. He had his hair spiked and glittered. With his wings the Russian were calling him the Green Butterfly. He’s the one who sang the Barbie song at the talent show a while back.

Next Sunday is fast Sunday. Our branch is fasting for Sister Vera and then we are breaking out fast after church. That was a topic of one of the talks in Sacrament meeting today, fasting. She reminded us to fast with a purpose. I know when I do that it definitely makes fasting easier.
For dinner today I had homemade rolls, Cucumber salad, corn, Balsamic chicken and potatoes. Desert was cake and ice cream. The Cake was a blueberry cake mix that had very few blueberries. I didn’t like it that much and the potatoes were cooked all the way through. Dad liked it and the elders went back for more so I guess it was ok.

They ate all the cucumber salad. I used the cheese grater on the side that is for thin slices and sliced up 4 cucumbers with the peeling on. Then I added finely chopped onion. In that I put a mixture of vinegar, sour cream, sugar, dill and salt and pepper. I’ll have you know I didn’t even try one bite. Hey we are at my house; I don’t have to eat it.

It was great talking to all of you this week. Lauryn I used you as an example today. When the Elder’s came in they were talking about Elder’s Quarnburgs look that says “you’re beneath me.” He said he watched girls give that look and decided to copy it. He showed his look to us and I told him I had an expert in my family on that look. I showed them the Facebook post with you guys eating the whipped cream and then it goes to your face, Lauryn, that almost shouted “I’m disgusted with you,” and they all started laughing because Elder Quarnburg had it down perfectly. (So does Lauryn)

I am sending sunset pictures and a picture on a wall getting ready for the World cup championship being played here in Samara in 2018. Some snow pictures and a handy use I found for our “bidet.”

Love,

Mom

A note from the Daughter

This pic came from Mom last night.  Weather for the week in Samara doesn't look like it will get above freezing!  I'm thinking they'll experience a real Russian winter...

I love these two people soooo much.  I'm so grateful for their sacrifice and example.  They serve with all their hearts.  Through all the dinners, testimonies, conferences, the chaos of the office, and things beyond our imaginations they give everything they have.  Their experience and wisdom is invaluable in the lives of our family (and in the mission) and my heart overflows with gratitude.  What wonderful Grandparents and parents they are!

Dear Family,

So this week has be quiet since the Ottesen’s and the AP’s have been gone to zone conferences.  Last Sunday Sister Ottesen invited us, NovoK Elders, Avrora and Bezi Elders and Sisters to come over for dinner. There were 18 of us. I made some banana cake and brought ice cream. It was a really good dinner. After dinner, we all sat around and President asked Sister Ottesen, and Dad and I to bear our testimonies. It was a great night. Dad quoted the scripture Moses 6:39 about walking with God. I bore testimony that I felt that each one of us is here at this time and this place for a purpose.

We had zone conference on Wednesday. I worked on making about 75 copies of a 27-page hand out for President. When we got to conference, we discovered that about ½ to 2/3 of the copies were missing the even pages. I’m not sure what happened. I know it couldn’t have been operator error. Anyway, after conference I went and fixed all of the ones that were wrong. So at least Saratov got the correct version. Of course, my mistake was discovered after President and Sister O heaped praises on Dad and I.

For conference the AP’s gave us a physical demonstration from our about the Armor of God. President and Sister Ottesen brought some armor with them from California. A sword, (actually they bought that here), breast plate, shield, footwear, Head stuff. Elder Pacheco wore it and he looked like a roman soldier. I’ll include some pictures.

Ephesians 6:11-18 are the scripture references we used as they were taking off his armor. We had a great discussion about it. There was a lot of good feedback from our Volunteers. I already told this to Nica in an email but while the discussion was going on it occurred to me that the armor we were looking at would physically fit Sister Shumway a lot differently that it did Elder Pacheco. I thought how the Armor of God is personal, made to fit each of us. Through our prayer and preparation, we can be ready for whatever comes at us. Maybe Elder Pacheco (branch president for the Bezi branch) needs a stronger shield today because everyone is coming at him with problems. Maybe Sister Shumway needs a thicker breastplate because she is feeling a little tender hearted. The Armor of God is made to fit each of individually, even though its purpose is universal.

Elder Wilde was there at conference. He has been out since last May. He had been in the office when the new volunteers came in October. He was sitting in the office saying how much he was reminded of home. He didn’t know what it was. Some smell or something. He kept saying is just feels like home! We finally figured out that it was my lotion and it reminded him of his mom. When I saw him at zone conference, he came over to shake my hand and said the same thing. I hope I don’t make him homesick.

Saturday we met our NovoK Elders and went to a museum about the history of NovoK. It was very interesting. We paid 330 Rubles or about $5.50. Apparently, that bought us a whole tour (usually 12 people) and our tour guide was the director of the museum.  It was great having the elders there to interpret for us. Dad and I left a donation for their children’s program. They showed up a mannequin of a woman in traditional dress. I guess at the woman’s wedding if she had made 14 dresses, she would wear them all to her wedding. The husband to be wasn’t there. He was just walking around town and came back later. There was a small spinning wheel there and the director told us that children, as young as 5, would start to learn how to spin yarn and weave cloth. When we were done, the director invited us back anytime and she will show us some of the things we couldn’t see. They had some stuff set up for a children’s group that was coming.

Then we were taking the elders to lunch. They decided to hit this bakery. We bought some drinks at a market and then stopped at the bakery. We bought some Bread stuffed with hamburger and cabbage. Then some smaller ones that were bread stuffed with mashed potatoes, and one with Egg and onions. We also bought a chicken sandwich and of course some pastries. It was all really good. Dad and I really wish we had a bakery like that close to us. We took everything back to the branch building to eat. It was great.

We went home and I started on my Sunday dinner preparation. I made my rolls and chopped up carrots and onions and, wrapped my potatoes for baking. I bought this big oblong fruit. It looks like a cross between a cantaloupe and honeydew on the outside. The fruit inside is white. It is really tasty.  I made Roast today. I bought some ice cream and had chocolate topping as well as some homemade peanut butter topping.

I can’t believe that Dani is almost turning 18!! Where has the time gone? Then is a few short months Lauryn will be 14 and Sadie will be 6!! Then on and on!  Ahhhhhhhh you all need to stop this right now. No more growing up. We don’t have to worry about Brian in that regard because he may be getting older but we all know he isn’t growing up!!!

November 6th we have a couple coming from Moscow to train us on addiction recovery and self-reliance. That is also fast Sunday. We are fasting as a branch for Vera. She has heart problem and will be having an operation on November 11th. Please remember her in your prayers. After church, we are all bringing food to break our fast.

Well, that’s all from me.

President O is an amazingly spiritual man. He always seems to know what is needed by our young volunteers I’m including the President’s letter and some miracles. The volunteers write to him each week; here are some things they shared.

HAND OF THE LORD

1.         I have seen the hand of the Lord this week through the people in the ward. They have started to bring their friends to church and we now have a potential investigator to work with this week. This would not be possible without His help!

2.         This week, we had a great experience with a less active member, who we challenged to become worthy to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood. We've been working with this member for quite a while--and in fact, it's a miracle that we're even meeting with him. Not too long ago he was quite hostile towards the volunteers and members of the church, and he wouldn't agree to meet with anyone. Now, we meet with him weekly, do weekly service for him, and now he's accepting more and more of our words when we teach him. This past week, he came to church and--like we challenged him to do--spoke with the branch president about his goal to become worthy of the Melchizedek Priesthood. We were really excited when we heard that he had spoken with the branch president, we're sure that he can be a powerful asset to the branch.

3.         I started carrying my consecrated oil on my key chain with the house keys. Ever since I did that this week, I've given and been a part of more blessings than ever before in my life. I probably should have been carrying that with my before, but now I'm not going anywhere without it! We had the opportunity to stop by a member's home who had just been released from the hospital, and they asked us to come over and give a blessing to her. It was such a spiritual experience I am so grateful for the opportunity we had to bless that mother with the power of the priesthood.

4.         We stopped by last night at a member’s house who has been having a tough time because her mother is very ill and she has been taking care of her. We shared with her a spiritual thought and listened. Listening is key to building a relationship with people here. Granted, I don't understand everything, but I still try to listen and help them as the spirit directs. Love the people.

5.         We did some less active drop bys this week and my companion and a member stopped by a lady's home where she prayed and promised to come to church. All the members when we told them were doubtful, but she came!!

6.         This week I saw the hand of the Lord when I went on splits with a member to do drop bys. We went to this one address and this babuska answered the Door and the member with me said, "Hi Nina! We've missed you, etc" and this less active was so cute. She said, "Hello girls! Its so good to see you. I'll pray!" And she started praying right then and there. We told her about General Conference and she wants to come. She also asked when we take the sacrament and we explained its every sunday at 10 and she said, "REALLY?!" She was so happy. We told her how to get to the prehod from there and she was so excited. I was super excited afterwards. I was literally bouncing I was so happy and you know what? SHE CAME!! She showed up early for sacrament meeting and she came to gospel principles class with us and had some great comments on the lesson.

7. To strengthen the branch this week we did some more construction on Sister Yakovleva's house in order to help her get ready for the winter. We also talked more with branch leaders about getting her some help and had some more positive responses than we had heard in the past. We talked about organizing home teaching and the elders quorum. I think we are starting to see some real changes get made here.

8. Miracles of this week start with our member, Vera. She is that baba whom we help take to church in a taxi. She feels super sad whenever we don't meet with her. We haven't had much time to meet with her these past two weeks, so we stopped by on Monday. She told us then how it was her birthday on Friday, although she didn't think it was anything special. She wasn't looking forward to it. I felt pretty bad. We wanted to stop by and make her something, but I knew we'd be in Samara on Thursday for my visa trip so we would have no time to see her. However, due to registration reasons, we had to be back Friday morning. So after waking up at 4am to go on a bus to Kazakstan for about 10 hours, I was right back on an 11pm 8-hour bus ride back. You could say it was not the most comfortable situation. We got home around 5:30am. Despite the business of the day we were still able to make a super simple cake and drop it off to her. We weren't planning to stay there long since we had a lot of stuff to do that day. We got there and just chatted with her a little bit. We had nothing planned, but my comp felt impressed to share 2 Nephi 2:25. After her testimony about having joy in this life, you could tell Vera was super touched by that thought. Then it hit me all at once. She is the reason why we took that long, uncomfortable bus ride so late at night. Heavenly Father sent us to her. He made it possible for us to be there with her on her birthday. I then expressed my realization with her and she felt the Spirit testify of its truthfulness to her. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my mission. It was so simple, but it meant so much to her. God forgets no one.

9. We had a miracle this week. This member who had a bad stroke a couple of years ago came to church for the first time since he had the stroke. He bore his testimony and he just seem to be so happy to be at church. He talked about how the visits from the volunteers have really helped him. We gave him a blessing, he really has gotten stronger since then. We really do have the same priesthood that Christ used to heal so many people. It is amazing how the Lord gives us power as we try to help others and do His will.

Might Men and Women of Samara--October 17, 2016

17 Oct 2016
President Ottesen
Dear Elders and Sisters-

If you "are what you eat"---then you definitely become what you think about.

Your thoughts are connected with your future. Your thoughts precede your actions. President McKay used to say---"Thoughts lead to actions, actions lead to habits, habits form character and character shapes your destiny." If that is true, then when your mortal life is over, you will be the product of all your thoughts. Learning how to control your thoughts here in this mission environment will be a blessing to you here in Russia--and will bless you all your life.

In our Zone Training last month, we talked briefly about King David’s hand-picked “Mighty Men”. You will recall there were 37 of them, each mentioned by name in the Book of Chronicles. I am certain they were all men who could control their thoughts. They were noted for absolute obedience, self control and spirituality. They were all mentally disciplined --[they could “keep rank” (1 Chron 12:33)]. They were all spiritually converted to God--[“they were not of a double heart” (1 Chron 12:33)]. They possessed eternal perspective --["they were “men of understanding” (1 Chron 12:32)]. They also had unusual physical qualities. For example: 1) “they were armed with bows and could use both the right hand and left in hurling stones and shooting arrows from a bow” (1 Chron 12:2); 2) they were men “fit for battle” who could handle a sword and shield” (1 Chron 12:8); 3) they were courageous such that they had “faces like lions” (I Chron 12:8);and 4) they could run— so much so that they were “as swift as the deer upon the mountains” (1 Chron 12:8). A Mighty Man named Benaiah is reported to have killed a lion all by himself (1 Chron 11:24). A Mighty Man named Eleasar fought a troop of Philistines and smote them all “until his hand was weary” (1 Chron 11:12-14). And finally, a Mighty Man named Joseheb-Basshebeth fought an entire company of Philistines and defeated them (1 Chron 11:11). A pretty solid group.

4 GOOD REASONS TO CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS

1. The greatest commandment is to love God not only with all your heart, might and strength--but also WITH YOUR MIND. You keep or break this (the greatest) commandment to love Him with your MIND by choosing what you think about each day --in your MIND. If you think unkind thoughts about your companion--or if you replay unworthy images in your mind---you have broken this (the greatest) commandment. On the other hand, if you have kind and virtuous thoughts in your MIND ----and if you are, for example, patient and long-suffering with your companion--then you are keeping this key commandment.

2. You need revelation from God to be a successful volunteer here. You will need to hear and feel the promptings of the Holy Ghost which come to your heart and to your MIND (D&C 8:2-3). You will need to make sure your thoughts invite --and not scare off--the Holy Ghost so that critically needed revelation can be part of your work here.

3. You will be judged by your thoughts. The Lord said this: "But this much I can tell you, that if you do not watch yourselves, AND YOUR THOUGHTS, and your words and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God and continue in the faith...ye must perish. And now, O man, remember and perish not." (Mosiah 4:30)

4. President McKay said: "You tell me what you think about when you do not have to think, and I’ll tell you what you are."

YOUR HEART

To control your thoughts you need to start deep in your heart. To whom does your heart really belong? Who owns you? Who are you trying to please each day? You are looking for that deep "mighty change of heart" described by King Benjamin. Of that process, Elder Bednar said: "this mighty change is not simply the result of working harder or developing greater discipline, rather it is a fundamental change in our desires, motives and our natures made possible through the atonement of Christ the Lord." The Holy Ghost will transform your nature--and with His help you will be able to move from "natural man" kinds of thoughts to "man of Christ" kinds of thoughts. When you feel the influence of Holy Ghost, you can know that this mighty change is underway in your heart. And, as it becomes more constant in your heart, you will find you have less desire to do evil---but rather to do good (AND THINK GOOD) continually.

YOUR SEARCH

This change of heart has to begin with serious study (not casual reading) of His word. There is no other way to get it done. Diligently searching (not casual reading) the Book of Mormon will help your thoughts become more like your Heavenly Father's thoughts. The Book of Mormon will have a more powerful effect on your mind than any other book. I am a serious fan of the Book of Mormon. The Book of Mormon is the best possible washing machine for your thoughts. The very best. If you want to control your thoughts then spend time in Book of Mormon. The more time you spend in there the greater desire you will have to pray. Prayer will give you power to turn away any angry, dark or unworthy thoughts. If you fail to make searching prayer a regular part of your day then it is not a matter of WHETHER you will give in to temptation--it will just be a matter of WHEN. I suppose I have counseled thousands of people in the church over the last 35 years---many with serious personal spiritual problems. Here are 2 undisputed takeaways from the sum of those counseling sessions: 1) all sinful actions described to me began with improper thoughts, and 2) Never once did I sit across from someone in an interview who had a serious spiritual problem who was also daily praying, and daily searching the scriptures. Not once.

Christ said: "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23) Put another way, we cannot follow Christ without first denying ourselves of worldly thoughts and appetites.

I admire your desire to serve the Lord here in Russia. I invite you to recommit yourselves to being mighty men and women in Samara----powerful models of mastering thoughts. As you know, we are each witnesses of Him who is the mightiest man of all. He lives. He has all power. He will help you. I assure you He is very interested in helping you succeed with this one.

Sister Ottesen and I love you very much!

Dear Family,

Well, it was a kind of quiet week. Our AP’s went to Orenburg for a few days and their presence at the office does generate a lot of traffic and phone calls. They got back on Friday, just a little late for the start of district meeting.

I’ve got to try and track down a Russian audio version of the Book of Mormon for an investigator of Sister Thomas’s who is blind. She said they tried the internet but they didn’t have the audio in Russian.  Then I have to get a Chinese version of the Book of Mormon for our German Elder in Kazan. He is an amazing young man. He had to learn English in order to learn Russian. He spoke some English but not a lot. He was at the Provo MTC. So now he is fluent in German, English and Russian. He goes home next month but we got another German Elder last month.

It is getting colder now. In fact, while in church today it started to snow. The weather app told me that it was 36 degrees but felt like 32. I’m going to have to pull out my “stay puff marshmallow-man coat pretty soon. Sunrise is at 7:09 am and Sunset is at 5:40 PM. We are losing all of our time to walk.

The Russians think that all illness starts with the cold. They bundle themselves up as well as their kids as soon as it starts getting cold. I’m sweating in a light coat and they have on a winter coat.

The Church has started a “Behind the Walls” program for our volunteers. They are supposed to get out into the community and make friends. Well a several Elders in our area got in touch with a professional Ultimate Frisbee team here in the Samara area. They went to play them on Saturday. Our Volunteers lost but the score was 13 to 9 so they didn’t get creamed plus the got to interact with 20 Russians during this game. The Russian team wants them to go and play other teams with them but the games are usually on Sunday so that isn’t going to happen. All the guys were really stoked by the experience.

At our branch meeting, during the 2 and 3rd hours the sisters watched women’s conference and the men watched the priesthood session. I really enjoyed the conference, especially the song the young women sang, How Firm the Foundation. I also liked President Uchtdorf reference to working hard; making it to the last floor and the last door. Our Sacrament Meeting is unique in that President Krievov frequently has his 6 year old daughter say the closing prayer.

Sister O and I went to Metro on Thursday. I am still running true to form in that I don’t think I have much to buy and then go ahead and spend over 10,000 rubles. We use reusable bags here or else you pay for plastic bags. I finally got wise and started to always bring all my bags with me. I kept buying more than I planned and ended up buying the plastic bags. Now I just bring them all with me, every time I shop for groceries.

Along with our Metro run on Thursday, Sister O and I went to the ballet/opera house and bought 40 tickets to the Nutcracker for December. This is a reward for all the Samara and Toliatti zones for working hard on their SYL (speak your language). The Saratov area is going to see Swan Lake in November.

Sister O invited most of the Samara zone to her house for Sunday dinner today. The Penza and Orenburg volunteers are too far away to come. There will be 18 of us. I made two banana cakes and had already bought some ice cream to take over. It should be a lot of fun.

Last night the Ottesen’s put on a special fireside for the Besimonski branch. It was on Family home evening. Then they showed them how to do one. They did, putting on the armor of God. I sent picture of Elder Quarnburg getting girded up.

President’s letter was great this week:
It is easier to avoid temptation than it is to resist temptation.

I invite you to think about your greatest temptation here in Russia---whatever that may be--- and then ponder and pray about what you can do to avoid it in the future-- rather than simply trying to resist it each time. Then, I invite you to follow through on the "avoidance revelation" that I believe will come to you. This process will start with prayer.

I need to introduce you to Ernie.

Raising a family of boys allowed us to have plenty of pets, including a variety of reptiles. One of our favorite family reptiles was a ball python that belonged to my son Andrew. His name was Ernie. Ernie was our first pet snake. Like most snakes, Ernie didn't have much personality. He was motionless most of the time. The boys quickly learned that the best part about owning Ernie was feeding him. When Ernie was young, the boys fed him small "pinky" mice each week. After a while, Ernie outgrew the pinkies and moved on to regular mice. He would typically eat one mouse every 2 weeks. Feeding day was exciting and took place in the garage---far away from Sister Ottesen. All five boys typically attended the event, hovering over Ernie's cage to watch the carnage. To begin, one of the boys would usually put a ski glove (in case the snake decided to strike) and then drop the mouse into cage. As soon as the mouse was dropped in, it saw Ernie and instinctively (and immediately) scampered to the opposite side of the cage and began scratching madly to get out. Initially, Ernie did nothing. It was odd--because we knew he was very hungry but he just lay there in the corner of his cage all curled up. We kept watching. After about 10 minutes or so, Ernie would begin to show some signs of life and then turn his head in the direction of the mouse. Then, Ernie would smoothly start to glide his way toward the mouse. As soon as Ernie would get within 10 inches or so of the mouse, the mouse would frantically dart to the opposite side of the cage away from the snake. Patiently, Ernie would then pause and slowly turn back again toward the mouse. Just as Ernie would get close to the mouse, the mouse would quickly scamper to the opposite side of the cage. However, we observed something interesting happen with each of these approaches by Ernie. Each time Ernie would advance toward the mouse, the mouse would allow him to get just a little bit closer each time. After about 20 minutes or so of this back-and-forth drama, the boys could see that Ernie could actually get within just an inch or so of the mouse’s nose before the mouse would eventually scamper to the other side of the cage. Each time, Ernie patiently turned to follow the mouse. Eventually, Ernie would actually be able to get up to the very tip of the mouse’s nose --almost as if he was simply trying to make friends with the mouse. But Ernie was definitely not looking for friends. Then, in a split second, Ernie would grab the mouse by the head and twist his coils all around the mouse’s body—and that was the end of the mouse. Victory for Ernie.

In my experience, the more you pay attention to what is tempting you, the more you get used to that temptation. The more you flirt with sinful thoughts or habits or faithless thoughts, the less shocked you are about those sinful thoughts, habits or faithless thoughts. This process of accommodation makes it easier for you to become casual about important spiritual things. In such situations, Joseph in Egypt is your ideal model: when he was tempted, “he … fled”. You need to run.

Jesus had to have noticed the tremendous temptations that came to him, but He chose not process and reprocess them. Instead, He rejected them promptly (the scriptural record we have says he simply--"gave no heed unto them"). Elder Maxwell said---

"If we entertain temptations, soon they begin entertaining us! Turning these unwanted lodgers away at the doorstep of the mind is one way of giving no heed. Besides, these would-be lodgers are actually barbarians who, if admitted, can be evicted only with great trauma."

When the people of Ammon were converted to the Lord, they didn’t hang their swords above the mantel. They buried them. Deep. Yes, very deep! They were not only avoiding temptation but closing the door on temptation. Completely. They were also putting any reminders of their past behind them:

"We will hide away our swords, yea, even we will bury them deep in the earth, that they may be kept bright, as a testimony that we have never used them, at the last day. . . .And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again."

We are taught to not to even touch “unclean things” and to avoid even the very “appearance of evil.” This result starts with your prayers. In fact, your daily prayers ---while you are His full-time representatives here in Samara--- should not be any different than Nephi’s heartfelt prayer where he said: “Lord, Wilt thou make me that I may shake at the appearance of sin?”

Shake? Really? Yes. Doesn't Nephi's prayer really sound like he is asking the Lord for strength to completely AVOID sin? ---before he ever wandered close to it? So it should be with you--as you reach out to Him in heartfelt personal prayer.

In the Garden of Gesthemene, just before the Lord went off to pray, He gave his sleepy apostles this simple recipe for pulling off "avoidance" (not resistance) of sin---he told them to:

"WATCH and PRAY, that ye enter not into temptation". His recipe suggests two acts of faith which are already familiar to you: to watch and to pray. To watch means to be "on guard". And prayer, as you know, is "THE" mechanism for staying "on guard" against the worldly images and influences and negative thoughts that surround you here----the mechanism for helping you avoid ALL temptations. ALL sinful thoughts. ALL ungodly habits. ALL faithless thoughts. ALL things that may rob you of His spirit.

So...prayer is where you start.

Not all that complicated, right? I know He will help you "avoid" and not just "resist"! I know you can do this!

Love you all,

Mom

Dear Family,

Well, this week has been great! I turned 65 so now I’m older than Nancy is, again. On Monday, I came into the office and was greeted by an off-key happy birthday by the 3 Elders in the office. I turned and saw that my desk and wall were covered with hearts from Sister Ottesen and, she gave me a big bag of M&M’s and a card. I few minutes later, two more Elders came in with cake and juice. Dad had arranged for all of the elder stuff. Everyone in the office had cake and juice. This I got birthday wishes all day long. It was great. Even on Tuesday, I got a big bottle of coke zero and a giant Twix bar from the Avrora Sisters and Sister Thomas. To go along with all that, I heard from all my kids and tons of good wishes on Facebook. A great way to turn 65

We met our 10 New Elders and 1 new Sister on Wednesday morning. With Visa Trips and Transfers, we had a house full for several days. The New Volunteers are great. I’m really impressed with them. Wendy texted me a few days before they came and told me that the woman she works with, Jill, has a son whose best friend was coming to our mission. (I hope you could follow that). This Elder is Elder Briggs. I told Wendy to tell Jill to tell Jill’s son’s best friends mom and I would take good care of him. Anyway, they told me what Elder Brigg’s favorite candy bar was. I bought the closest thing to it and put a post it note on it saying it was from Taylor. Elder Briggs was very excited about it. His friend Taylor is serving a mission in the Dominican Republic. I was impressed with Elder Briggs because he actually carried on a conversation with President Blinkov in Russian. President Blinkov is our Visa guy and he is also the Branch President of the Avrora Branch.

Another of our new Elders was Elder Tyler Nelson from Brigham City, Utah. His family is in the Brigham City 13th ward and he lives on Maple Dr. close to Gigi and Papa’s house. He said he didn’t know any Phippens; I told him most likely it would be his parents who might know them. I also mentioned Vanderhoof, Jensen and Kennington, but he didn’t know those either. We’ll see if his parents know any of those names.

I’m sending you a picture of the new volunteers being taught to “conteek”. You take a small bite off the ends of a chocolate covered cookie, use it as a straw, suck up milk into it, and eat it.

All of our new volunteers were put up on a hotel for two nights except for Sister Clark. She went with the Avrora sisters and Sister Thomas. Because there were so many elders, the logistics were hard. We not only had to house them but all of their trainers, and the trainer’s former companions. Anyway, we put the volunteers in a hotel and the rest of them in various apartments. This also saved some work for Sister O. She had original planned to make them a Dinner Tuesday night, breakfast Wednesday morning and dinner Wednesday night. She only ended up having to make dinner Wednesday evening. She thought she would have to feed the new volunteers and their trainers and after preparing most of the food she found out it was just the new volunteers. She thought she’d have way too much food but ended up with no casserole left over. The only thing left was some fruit and rolls. I went up early to help get things ready.

Apparently, on Wednesday night some Elders, who should know better, decided to start a small little campfire on the roof. The Apartment where our AP’s and Zone leaders are staying is huge and it’s right next to the Ottesen’s apartment. It opens out onto the roof. A couple of them(not the AP’s or Zone leaders) thought they’d sleep on the roof and then thought about camping out and then decided to have a camp fire. Well there are security cameras everywhere and the next day someone from the apartment complex talked to Sasha (works in the office) about it. When President Ottesen found out, he was ticked and that’s saying something for President O. The Mission could have all been kicked out or Pres. O could have been kicked out for what they pulled and of course, they could have started a real fire. Anyway, the end result is that they are looking for another apartment for the AP’s and Zone leaders. It wasn’t a malicious act just an unthinking one.

I found out this week that we have another senior couple coming in January. They will be doing CES (church education system). They are Elder and Sister Bowlen from Texas.

Last week we had Uvgeny from Moscow upgrading all of our computers and putting in new hard drives. We found out that he was on a mission with Maria, out branch president’s wife. He said she was always excited and involved with everything. He told us that whenever they had an activity they would bring extra Band-Aids for Maria.

Saturday Dad and I walked down to see this wooden plaque on a wall. I’ll send a picture of it. This is what the Internet says about it.
“Legend has it that Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, later Patron Saint of Samara, visited the site of the city in 1357 and predicted that a great town would be erected there, and that the town would never be ravaged. The Volga port of Samara appears on Italian maps of the 14th century. Before 1586, the Samara Bend was a pirate nest. Lookouts would spot an oncoming boat and quickly cross to the other side of the peninsula where the pirates would organize an attack. Officially, Samara started with a fortress built in 1586 at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers.[12] This fortress was a frontier post protecting the then easternmost boundaries of Russia from forays of nomads. A local customs office was established in 1600.”

.

We were going to go watch the Elders play some football. They met a group of guys who play for a Russian football team and I don’t mean soccer. As part of the BEHIND THE WALLS program, they got the okay to play. It is a program that is supposed to integrate our volunteers in to Russian life. One of our deported Volunteers is now teaching a Cross Fit training class. Anyway, we found out today that our Elder Hemrick was taken to the hospital with a concussion. He had a collision with a much taller and bonier Elder Pacheco. He came to dinner to today so is doing much better.

On Friday, we had district meeting and elder Johnston gave the spiritual thought. He chose Alma 59:9
9 And now as Moroni had supposed that there should be men sent to the city of Nephihah, to the assistance of the people to maintain that city, and knowing that it was easier to keep the city from falling into the hands of the Lamanites than to retake it from them, he supposed that they would easily maintain that city.

He gave his take on this and I started thinking that this could be for us today also. That it is easier to maintain staying on the right path rather than fall off and have to work twice as hard to get back to where you were.

The on-service projects that the volunteers have in our area are working once a week at the animal shelter, once a week at a home for invalids and once per week at home where everyone is in a wheelchair. They are working hard to make the lives of the Russian people better.

We watched conference at church today. Dad and I watched the Saturday sessions on Friday and Saturday. Sunday we watched last week’s Sunday sessions. Next week during the third hour we will watch the Women’s conference and the men will watch the Priesthood session. I really enjoyed all of it. I even managed to stay away for everything we watched. Everyone brought food to share. I made a huge ham and cheese pasta salad and 30 banana cupcakes. We took a taxi on the way up and we not only gave him a tip but a cupcake too!!

The AP’s, Johnston and Buchanan and the Zone leaders, Quarnburg and Hemrick came for Sunday dinner. I made hamburgers, pasta salad, and French fries. Of course, we had banana cupcakes for dessert. We did take a picture to send to Elder LaBaron (he was transferred) to show him what he missed.

Well, I’m going to send you some birthday pictures, Plaque pictures, and Volunteer Picture and a little of the fall colors.

Love you all,
Mom

Dear Family,

I can’t believe it’s time to write home again. Time is flying. Officially, we have 10 months and 12 days left. When I get to the office on Monday, I have to start working on the travel home arrangements for our volunteers going home in February 2017. In March or April 2017, I’ll start on travel arrangements for Dad and me. I just have to request information from the parents and then enter the dates and passport info into the Church Travel website and they do the rest. I do have a packet I put together for them and Dad gets them luggage money and creates a mission history CD.

The last part of the week has been pretty wild with Volunteers all over the place. We had visa trips on Thursday and a lot of them are just staying because of transfers and trainers picking up new Volunteers. The New ones will be flying in Tuesday night at 7:45 to Samara. I’ll get to see them Wednesday morning when they come for orientation. We have 10 Elders and 1 Sister coming in. We have an Elder and Sister scheduled for November and 8 Sisters for December so far. We had a lot more Elders but they were reassigned to other missions. We did have only two sisters for December then the other 6 were reassigned to us.

President O was telling us about when he and Sister O went to the mission president’s conference a few weeks ago. I guess they stood up and said that the Samara Russia mission deserved the Green Beret award because we’ve had twice as many incidents as the other missions. Since the new law started, we used to be able to say we hadn’t had any but we did get one call up on Friday. It was just a document check.

Friday we took Elder Johnston and Elder Buchanan to lunch, for Elder Johnston’s birthday, at a little Russian place just across the street from the market we go to. Dad, Elder Johnston and I had chicken Shashalee and Elder Buchanan ordered Dove. He wondered if he got the right stuff because it kind of tasted like ground beef. We fed all 4 of us with drinks and everything for around 1350 rubles, about $22.

We had district meeting and I made a cake to celebrate Elder Johnston’s birthday. It was lemon cake with vanilla frosting. We had two extra people there. One of them is going home on Monday and the other one is his companion. After everyone had a piece of cake and I gave, President Blinkov and Sister Anna a piece there were three left. Elder Mills, and Sister Shumway asked for one and I gave the other to the birthday boy. After the meeting, Elder Mills came over to the cake pan and was scraping the frosting off it. It turned out pretty good.

Saturday Dad took me to the Hadsen Steak house for lunch for my birthday. We’ve been there before so we knew not to order so much. We both got chicken Caesar salads and an appetizer of tiger shrimp (which had about 10 good-sized shrimp on the plate). It was all really good. With the salad, I gave Dad my tomatoes and olives and he gave me his eggs. The eggs were tiny so I wonder what kind of eggs they were. They tasted like chicken eggs. We didn’t do much else besides grocery shop because it was overcast and rainy.

I’ve decided my hair is the worst type in Russia. When it isn’t actually raining, it feels like its misting. The ends of my hair in front are always going every which way. The people with naturally curly hair pay a price also. Then when it’s hot and humid, my hair doesn’t cooperate either. I should probably just get it cut like Dad’s. (no chance of that)

We woke up early this morning because I had to put together my dinner. I made Chicken potpie stew. When the recipe calls for cream of chicken soup I have to make that from scratch, (I did that on Saturday night). I made buttermilk biscuits with real buttermilk the night before. I made the apple crisp last night without the topping; I did that when we got home from church. We ended up with on biscuit left out of 24 and a smidgen of potpie stuff. I did send the left over apple crisp home with them. We had to team the apple crisp up with chocolate chip ice cream. (I forgot to get some vanilla)
Elder LaBaron is being transferred so this is his last Sunday dinner with us and he’s not happy about it. The other Elder’s promised to text him a picture of the meal next week. I heard Elder Quarnburg, who is the new zone leader, saying to one of the other Elder’s “Yes, Sunday dinner with the Stewarts.” He said this with a fist pump. I don’t know if he realizes that since they are looking for an apartment for the zone leaders in Bezimanski that he’ll probably be too far away to come to dinner. It’s about a 45-minute bus ride away. I guess he’ll have a couple of dinners under his belt before he has to stop coming.

It was fast and Testimony meeting today. As I was sitting there, a wave of emotion came over me. I thought about how these people were really my brothers and sisters and that we probably knew each other in the pre-existence. I could hardly contain the love I felt for these people. We are family. I bore my testimony with some help from the Elders and Dad bore his. He didn’t have hardly any help. He is learning the language really well, although he doesn’t think so. He did announce that it was my birthday on Monday. I got some happy birthday wishes and then one sister wanted a party and wanted to know which day I could come. I told them we’d be there on Saturday to watch conference and we could celebrate then. Sister Ludmilla gave me a bag of grapes and something else to eat that I don’t know what it is. I felt bad taking it because I know she doesn’t have much. She is the sweetest lady. She bore her testimony about how grateful she was for the temple. She is a widow and she was able to have him sealed to her. It was a very good testimony meeting with many heartfelt testimonies.

As Dad and I were waiting for our taxi home little 6 year old Veronica (the Elders nicked named her the tank) gave me some flowering weeds. I told her thanks you and gave her a hug. I told you we woke up to fog today; well by the time we left for home, we had sunshine. It was beautiful.

President O had another great letter this week that I wanted to share with all of you:
President Letter--Bathroom Prayer--9/25
23 Sep 2016

“Dear Elders and Sisters!

Even though I had prayed my whole life as a young boy, I don't think I every really connected with god in meaningful prayer until my mission. Frankly, I seemed to struggle constantly with my mind wandering as I prayed. I ultimately realized that the best way to deal with this problem was to speak out loud as I prayed. Unfortunately, the only private place my German apartments was the bathroom—which was shared by other tenants on the same floor. It became my practice retire there, lock the door, and kneel next to the sink—often with the light off. In those dark bathrooms, often in tears, I struggled (and found) a new connection with God. I know this will sound odd but those dingy German bathrooms are now sacred places to me. When I finally take sister Ottesen back to Germany to show her where I worked and lived-- I think I will first take her first to the bathrooms where I first learned about meaningful prayer.

Joseph Smith also learned much about meaningful prayer as he grew in the gospel:

1.            Connecting with God in prayer requires you to accept the fact that Heavenly Father is driving the Marshutka—and that if you are even on the bus --you are simply a passenger.

The first vision reminds us that we are absolutely dependent upon the Lord for knowledge we simply cannot get without His help. After Joseph read James 1:5, he later wrote:

“Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know…At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God.”

Note that Joseph came to know that without God’s help he would remain in darkness and confusion about the knowledge that he needed. Do you ever feel like that? ? Are there things important to you that you cannot know without God’s help? Is there inspiration you lack? Or intervention you need? If so, you need to start your prayer connection by acknowledging Heavenly Father is driving the bus and without his help you have no hope of getting what you desire.

2.            Don’t be shy about repeatedly asking the Lord in prayer for the same blessing---"weary the Lord" until He blesses you.

What? This sounds like nagging, doesn’t it? Don’t forget the parable of the widow and the unjust judge. The parable reads:

“And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.”

Of this parable, Joseph Smith said: “God is not a respecter of persons. We all have the same privilege. Come to God. Weary Him until He blesses you.”

3. Ask your family at home to join you in prayer over things you things you desire from God. Join in their faith.

It seems obvious that we would want to join our faith with our family to obtain blessings, but consider this account of Joseph and Hyrum-- both being stricken with cholera:

“Soon after arriving at the point of destination, the cholera broke out among us, and the brethren were so violently attacked that it seemed impossible to render them any assistance. They immediately sent for us to lay hands on them, but we soon discovered that this also was the judgment of the Almighty, for when we laid our hands upon them in the name of the Lord in order that they might be healed, the disease instantly fastened itself upon us. And in a few minutes we were in awful distress. We made mute signals to each other and left the house for the purpose of going into some secluded place to join in prayer that God would deliver us from this awful influence; but before we could get a sufficient distance to be secure from interruption, we were scarcely able to stand upon our feet and we were greatly alarmed, fearing that we should die in this western wilderness so far from our families, without even the privilege of blessing our children or giving them one word of parting counsel. Hyrum cried out, ‘Joseph, what shall we do? Must we be cut off from the face of the earth by this horrid curse?’
“‘Let us,’ said Joseph, ‘get down upon our knees and pray to God to remove the cramp and other distress and restore us to health, that we may return to our families.’ [Here we see these two brothers, Joseph and Hyrum, joining their faith in praying for each other and their healing] We did so but without receiving any benefit, but still grew worse. We concluded, however, to make a second effort, and when we kneeled again, the cramp seized the calves of Joseph’s legs, gathering the cords into bunches, and then the operation extended in like manner all over his system. He cried heartily unto God, but the heavens seemed sealed against us and every power that could render us any assistance shut within its gates. The universe was still. ‘When we arose again,’ said Joseph, ‘I found Hyrum was in the same situation with myself.’

“We soon came to the resolution of appealing again to God for mercy, and not to rise from our knees until one or the other got a testimony that we should be healed, and he who received the first intimation from the Spirit should inform the other of the same. We prayed some time, first one and then the other, and soon perceived that the cramp began to loose its hold. In a short time Hyrum sprang to his feet and exclaimed, ‘Joseph, we shall return, for I have seen an open vision in which I saw Mother on her knees under an apple tree praying for us, and she is even now asking God, in tears, to spare our lives, that she may behold us again in the flesh. The Spirit testifies to me that her prayers and ours shall be heard’-and from that moment we were healed and went on our way rejoicing.”
“Oh, my mother,” said Joseph, “how often have your prayers been a means of assisting us when the shadows of death encompassed us!”

4. Don’t be afraid to pray for something better than what you now have.

John Lyman Smith, cousin to Joseph Smith, was staying with Joseph and Emma and recorded this story:

“In my early years I used to often eat at the table with Joseph the Prophet. At one time he was called to dinner. I being at play in the room with his son Joseph, he called us to him, and we stood one each side of him. After he had looked over the table he said, ‘Lord, we thank Thee for this Johnny cake and ask Thee to send us something better. Amen.’ The corn bread was cut and I received a piece from his hand.
“Before the bread was all eaten, a man came to the door and asked if the Prophet Joseph was at home. Joseph replied he was, whereupon the visitor said, ‘I have brought you some flour and a ham.’
“Joseph arose and took the gift, and blessed the man in the name of the Lord. Turning to his wife, Emma, he said, ‘I knew the Lord would answer my prayer.’
Is this a prayer of ingratitude? I do not think so. I believe this is a prayer from someone who really knows the Lord and knows that He is a giver of good gifts to them that ask.

Note the Prophet’s translation of this scripture:

What man among you, having a son, and he shall be standing out, and shall say, Father, open thy house that I may come in and sup with thee, will not say, Come in, my son; for mine is thine, and thine is mine?

5. Come to know God so well that you really know to whom you are praying.

Joseph said the following about our exercising true faith in God:

“Let us here observe, that three things are necessary in order that any rational and intelligent being may exercise faith in God unto life and salvation.
“First, the idea that he actually exists.
“Secondly, a correct idea of his character, perfections, and attributes.
“Thirdly, an actual knowledge that the course of life which he is pursuing is according to his will.”

As I have come to know Him better, I am better able to pray to Him. His attributes are scattered all through the scriptures. King Benjamin said:

“Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that he has all wisdom, and all power, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all the things which the Lord can comprehend.”

So, what's the point? What do we learn?

He is the Creator of all things
He has all wisdom
He has all power both in Heaven and in earth
Man cannot comprehend all the things which the Lord can
A knowledge of these things helps us exercise true faith in Him.

Mary Elizabeth Rollins Lightner records this story-:

“[My mother and I] went a few evenings later to the Smith home, where others were already assembled. Soon Joseph came in and they held a meeting, the people mostly sitting on boards put across chairs. The Prophet began addressing the group, but after a while he stopped speaking and remained silent. His countenance changed, and he became so white that he seemed transparent. He stood looking intently over the congregation. Finally he spoke. ‘Do you know who has been in your midst tonight?’ Someone said, ‘An angel of the Lord.’ And Martin Harris said, ‘I know, it was our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.’ The Prophet put his hand on his head and said, ‘Martin, God revealed that to you. Brothers and Sisters, the Savior has been in your midst tonight. I want you all to remember it. There is a veil over your eyes, for you could not endure to look upon Him.’
“Then they knelt in prayer, which he led. His prayer was so long, that several of the people rose and rested and then knelt back down to endure to the end. Such a prayer,” Mary said, “I have never heard before or since. I felt he was talking to the Lord, and the power rested upon us all.”

Joseph could have this kind of prayer because he really knew the Lord personally and talked to Him as one man talketh to his friend. This is the kind of powerful prayer we are looking for.

6. Believe beforehand you will obtain your answer—exercise great faith.

The prayer Joseph offered that brought the angel Moroni into his bedroom was a prayer of faith. Oliver Cowdrey heard Joseph's version of the event and wrote this:

“[Joseph’s] heart was drawn out in fervent prayer, and his whole soul was so lost to every thing of a temporal nature, that earth, to him, had lost it charms, and all he desired was to be prepared in heart to commune with some kind messenger who could communicate to him the desired information of his acceptance with God. [And as Joseph recorded: …for I had full confidence in obtaining a divine manifestation, as I previously had one.
“At length the family retired, and he, as usual, bent his way, though in silence, where others might have rested their weary frames ‘locked fast in sleep’s embrace;’ but repose had fled, and accustomed slumber had spread her refreshing hand over others beside him—he continued still to pray—his heart, though once hard and obdurate, was softened, and that mind which had often flitted, like the ‘wild bird of passage,’ had settled upon a determined basis not to be decoyed or driven from its purpose.”

So what do we learn from this prayer?:

Joseph had full confidence he would obtain a vision.
He was drawn out in fervent prayer.
His whole soul was lost to every thing of this earth.
His heart was softened.
He was determined.

7. Cry from the depths of your soul.

Sometimes we really want something from the Lord and we have to keep praying for days, weeks, months or longer. This seemingly unanswered prayer keeps us on our knees pleading for much longer than we ever planned.

Joseph Smith had been arrested on November 1, 1838—and for the next 140 days straight he prayed for release and pleaded with God for justice to be given to him and his companions. He cried out in the anguish of his soul:

“Oh, God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place?”

I have gotten to that point of crying out. A mission in Russia (or even Germany) can do that. I have prayed for relief --hoping for the same words that came to Joseph: “My son [my daughter], Peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but for a small moment.”

As Joseph did his crying out--he drew closer to the Lord. He was given strength and confidence and power that he did not have. Before Liberty Jail, Joseph always had a spokesman to speak for him: Sidney Rigdon or Oliver Cowdery would give the big addresses, Joseph the short ones. After Liberty, no one spoke for Joseph.

I testify that God is willing to teach us how to meaningfully pray here in Russia--whether your prayers are in the bathroom, or someplace else.

Sister Ottesen and I love you!!

President Ottesen”

Love you all tons,
Mom
